RIDE THE RIFT TIMKAT TOUR
Our specially-designed Timkat tour allows you to enjoy some spectacular cycling, running and walking in the awe-inspiring Jamma Gorge. The widespread gorge system is a land of canyons rivalling the Grand Canyon in Arizona. You will be astounded by the sheer cliffs and waterfalls of this mighty river gorge. Home to large troops of Gelada baboons and numerous raptors you will also have chance to enjoy some superb wildlife as you ride, run and walk in these stunning surroundings. All this – just a few hours’ drive from Addis!

EXCITING OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
Our cycling, hiking & running routes allow you to marvel at the grandeur of the mighty Jamma River canyon and its tributaries from the top of the plateau overlooking the gorge.
ALL-INCLUSIVE FULLY CATERED CAMPING
We provide tents, mattresses, toilet and shower facilities, and tasty meals and clean drinking water. Both campsites afford superb views down into the gorge.

In designing this itinerary we have worked closely with local authorities at zone and woreda level to ensure that the trip is fully supported by the local communities.

Whether you ride, run or walk, or just sit and goggle at the views, you will be blown away by the scenery and the feeling that you have stepped back in time. On each day of the tour a range of experiences and activities are on offer. You will come up close with traditional Amhara highland culture and with people whose lives are based around their churches and their farming life. And at the end of the trip you will be part of local Timkat celebrations which will last long in your memories.

Responding to interest for other activities, the programme for this tour includes opportunities to run and hike as well as ride horses in a way that fits around the needs of families with small children and those who want to do more than one activity.
The dates for this tour fall a few days after the January new moon. Conditions will be perfect for star-gazing into crystal-clear night skies with the added bonus of having telescopes and advice from experts of the Ethiopian Space Science & Technology Institute.
On Timkat Eve we will follow the procession as the Tabot is paraded to the Water Pool. On Timkat morning the local community will join us at our campsite for a special Timkat celebration.
